For patients and tourists: cannabis is for treatment only, needs a ภ.ท.33 prescription from a registered provider, and must never cross Thai borders.

In 2026, the only legal use of cannabis in Thailand is use for treatment under the supervision of a licensed healthcare practitioner. Smoking for recreation is not permitted.

The correct process

  1. Go to a licensed healthcare facility or pharmacy and check that it appears in the government's registration system.
  2. See a licensed practitioner, who will take your history and assess your symptoms.
  3. Receive a ภ.ท.33 controlled-herb prescription form stating the type and quantity (no more than a 30-day supply per prescription).
  4. Receive cannabis flower in the quantity on the prescription, and keep the prescription as proof.

Who should not receive cannabis

  • The draft Cannabis Control Act prohibits selling or dispensing cannabis to people under 20, pregnant women and breastfeeding women.
  • People a practitioner assesses as being at risk, for example those with heart disease, certain psychiatric conditions, or who take medicines that interact with cannabis.

Health precautions

Cannabis affects judgement and driving. Do not drive after use, and consult a practitioner if you take regular medication. If you have severe symptoms such as a strongly racing heart, difficulty breathing or confusion, go to a hospital or call 1669.

For tourists

  • A shop you see in a tourist area is not necessarily legal. Buy only from registered premises that dispense against a prescription.
  • Buying online, by delivery or from vending machines is illegal.
  • Do not bring cannabis or cannabis products into or out of the country.
  • Officers with inspection powers include public health officials, police, and provincial and district administration officials (Ministry of Interior).
